Boston, Massachusetts and Fenway Park - Day 2

I don’t know if you TGTG readers know this little fact about me, but I am a sports fan. Not one of those paint your face/body kind of fans or the ones who only have one team they dedicate a shrine to . . . but I love, love, love almost all sports. And baseball is near the top of the list.

So getting up in the early east coast morning, careening through downtown Boston, and dealing with two thousand different locals’ directions of how to get to Fenway Park was worth it to me.  With our days coming too quickly to a close, I felt seeing Fenway Park was a great ending to a very busy travel schedule both Ali and I planned and conquered.

One major obstacle – Boston downtown traffic. The worst part of finding the home of the Boston Red Sox was navigating the mish-mashed streets and reading several different maps at once to get there. We were both frazzled, but TGTGs prevailed and after stopping a few times for local Bostonians’ directions, we found the famous site we were looking for; we finally got to Fenway.

Here’s the thing: Fenway Park has been around for a long time. Actually, it’s the oldest of all current Major League Baseball stadia and the history it embodies is much longer and far too precious for me to relay it within a travel blog. But before the curse of the Great Bambino, and before the arrival of two World Series teams (finally!), there was just a field with some dirt and grass, where nine men took the field to play America’s favorite game. And of course, one giant green wall . . .

Ali and I took the official $12 tour of Fenway Park and let me say, if you’re a baseball fan, it’s worth every cent. The tour starts at several times throughout the day (ours was at 2:15pm I think) so it’s not hard to buy your tickets.  Make sure you get there on time so you don’t miss the guide’s introductory speech; they know the history of the ballpark and the team frontwards and back and like I said, if you’re a baseball fan, it’s a lot of fun listening to it.

I could use another couple paragraphs to detail the tour, but why recommend something to do while in Boston and then give all the information to you in a blog?! If you love baseball, and you’re in Boston, go take the tour.  It’s one of those “must do before you die” things for a sports fan.  The last day we had for Massachusetts was dedicated to seeing and hanging out around Fenway Park and that’s exactly what we did.

It was a relaxing finale to a wild ride we called our New England road trip. Sadly, it meant the end of a great journey, but seeing a part of east coast history on our last day to sightsee was magnificent.

For that reason, I have a special place in my heart for the Red Sox, but I will forever remain a loyal Twins fan!!

Aside from the excitement of seeing a historical landmark in the always prominent sport of baseball, the sting of knowing the trip was over slightly saddened both my and Ali’s mood. To top it off, there was rain.

Alas it’s true; our trip started with rain and ended the same way. But we were lucky, for every day in between was filled with sunshine, fantastic sites, and unforgettable memories that the Get There Girls were fortunate to share.

Back in our golden Kia one last time, I took the wheel and Ali guided us onto the unending twists of New England highways on our way back to Manchester, New Hampshire.

We’ve been a lot of places now overseas including Paris, London, Barcelona, and Rome, but there’s something to be said of our own country too and it’s something us wannabe world travelers often forget – the United States is a beautiful place.

And we’ve only seen a small portion of it.  …So far!
